Teach Children to Save
Students from Garfield, Phillips@Attucks and Scuola Vita Nuova Receive New Books
by Sarah Cousineau

Central Bank visited 5 urban classrooms with a fun lesson about saving, as part of Money Smart KC and Teach Children to Save. The first and second graders were excited to hear the stories we read about saving money like The Berenstain Bears Trouble with Money and Start Saving Henry. These lessons were part of the Federal Reserve Bank of KC curriculum and came with hands-on activities. We also visited a 5th grade class at Garfield Elementary where the students learned how to be energy detectives.  The students began by finding classmates that practice certain energy-consuming or energy-conserving behaviors and discuss why these practices are either good or bad. Then using calculators, each group helped calculate the cost of energy consumption in a common household.

Along with the lessons on saving money, Central Bank of KC also donated over 30 books to each classroom we visited (164 total books). Each child was able to pick out a level appropriate book to take home, as well as 5-10 books which will remain in the classroom for the class to read and enjoy.

Ronald McDonald House - Cherry Street
Central Bank Serves Dinner
by Sarah Cousineau

Last week, staff volunteers bought, prepared and served dinner to the residents and staff of the Cherry Street Ronald McDonald House. We grilled burgers and hot dogs, and prepared side dishes for dinner. A very cute toddler, who was part of a resident family staying there, entertained us while we prepared the food.
