A day at the beach is not complete without a good read, and the following stories are sure to entertain, thrill and enlighten. Be sure to grab your sunscreen, water, sunglasses and towel, but save room in your bag for these highly-acclaimed books for your summer getaway.

“An American Marriage: A Novel”

Author Tayari Jones weaves an emotional tale about navigating love and marriage in the face of heartbreaking adversity. Focusing on newlyweds Celestial and Roy, Jones examines what happens when past mistakes catch up to the future. Picked by Oprah Winfrey as one of her 2018 Book Club selections, “An American Marriage: A Novel” will keep you turning its pages long after the sun has gone down.

“How to Stop Time”

This time-twisting adventure spans the wild, long life protagonist Tom Hazard. This novel by Matt Haig defies the constraints of time and meditates on the universal search for love and happiness. “How to Stop Time” is an Editors’ Choice pick from The New York Times sure to capture your undivided attention.

“Surprise Me”

The brilliance of author Sophie Kinsella is that she can immediately pull you into her expertly crafted worlds. Her latest novel, “Surprise Me,” follows a married couple determined to bring “surprises” into their decade-long relationship. Kinsella’s ability to create memorable characters, spot-on dialogue and laugh-out-loud situations will elevate your day at the beach to hilarious and heartfelt proportions.

“The Woman in the Window”

If you prefer your carefree beach days to be wrapped up in suspense and intrigue, then grab A.J. Finn’s novel, “The Woman in the Window.” This psychological thriller centers on Anna Fox, a New Yorker who has witnessed something that changes her life. If you’re a fan of Alfred Hitchcock and other mysteries, you will undoubtedly love delving into the pages of Finn’s novel.

“Sunburn: A Novel”

Appropriately titled for a day at the beach, the novel “Sunburn” by Laura Lippman will keep you guessing and on the edge of your lounge chair. This psychological thriller centers on Adam and Polly, two star-crossed lovers who are holding back secrets that could spell their respective and collective doom. If you’re a fan of classic noir like “Double Indemnity” and “The Postman Always Rings Twice,” “Sunburn” should be at the top of your to-be-read pile.

“By the Book”

Author Julia Sonneborn will take you on a romantic adventure in her novel, “By the Book,” which is a deftly-crafted and thoughtful reimagining of Jane Austen’s beloved novel “Persuasion.” Anne Corey, an English professor living in California, cannot seem to escape her former fiancé, Adam Martinez. Despite a full plate, Anne can’t help but be drawn to the light of her former flame in a novel that Entertainment Weekly says is “filled with a touching understanding of love and loss that probes some of our most vulnerable moments.”

“Fall from Grace”

New York Times’ best-selling author Danielle Steel has captivated countless readers for years, and her latest novel, “Fall from Grace,” is a perfect companion for your summer vacation. You’ll be enthralled by Steel’s “gripping story of a woman who loses everything — her husband, her home, her sense of self and safety and her freedom.” The hours will disappear as you dive into one of Steel’s masterfully constructed stories.

Though you’ll no doubt be spending much of your summer getaway taking in new sights and sounds, spare some time to get lost in a world between the covers of a good book. These beach reads will augment the joy you feel on vacation and give you something extra to talk about with your friends and co-workers when you return home.
