The Choice Is Yours: Choose Happy!
A Message from Joey Root, President & CEO

Think of all the beauty still around you and be happy” is a remarkable quote, especially when one considers its source. The quote is credited to Anne Frank, a young lady who was in hiding from 1942-1944 during the German Occupation of the Netherlands.

From a secret place behind a bookshelf in her father’s workplace, the Frank family lived for two years with a couple of loyal co-workers of Mr. Frank as their only outside contact with the world. They were later joined by another family of 3 and then by a family friend. All were arrested on the morning of August 4, 1944. Anne and her older sister Margot were later sent to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp where they both died. Anne was 15 years old.

It is hard to believe that this young lady and her family were persecuted, forced into hiding, and later arrested simply because of their heritage. And yet despite the incredible hardships and misery she faced, Anne Frank chose to focus on the simple beauties of this life and to be happy.

Most people think that happiness is a destination. They believe it is the result of some success or other. But happiness is not a destination – it is a choice.

We make choices all day long every day. We choose what to eat and what to wear and whether or not we are going to exercise that day. We might decide to call our mom or clean the kitchen or call in sick. We can also choose to be happy, and it is definitely the right choice.

Everything in life is better when we are happy. Our work is better when we are happy. Our relationships are better when we are happy. You might think to yourself – well sure, it is easy to be happy if you have a great job and a good relationship with your spouse. But I would argue that it is much easier to excel at your job and to have great relationships if you are happy. Put another way; it is not success that fuels happiness, it is happiness that fuels success.

Tomorrow when you wake up you will have a choice to make. Choose Happy!
