Club 50s Treasure Islands
by Joan Galgay

We are so lucky to live in the Boston area – despite some of our winters: One of the most beautiful places in the world is only 27 miles out to sea! Nantucket is the place to be, as so many of you convinced me while we took in the delights of Martha’s Vineyard on day trips last summer.

So we have a lovely getaway planned for you June 23-25 during our stay at the Nantucket Inn resort. We’ll enjoy some great meals and feature a good mix of tours and free time – only the best for Club 50! Our first-day sign-up is April 26, so please refer to the form on the left and the Club 50 Opportunities column below for all of the details.

We also have some great news about our 10 Night Ultimate Caribbean Cruise (plus one night in Ft. Lauderdale) January 30-February 10, 2014: Our trip coordinator, Travel Showcase’s Ruth Rudnick, called us to share that the special offer of $300 per stateroom onboard credit when you deposit $900 per cabin has been extended to April 15. So if you need a little incentive to join the three-dozen-plus of us who will be basking in the Southern Caribbean sunshine on the Celebrity Equinox next winter, I hope this whets your appetite! Please call Ruth at 617-484-3558 to share in the fun.

Free Senior Movie Day: The Sequel!

Join us Wednesday, May 8 at the Embassy Cinema in Waltham for the latest Free Senior Movie Day! Watertown Savings Bank is teaming up once again with the Joyce Funeral Home, The Chateau Restaurant, and Mt. Auburn Hospital for the event, which opens with pre-show entertainment from Bob Vanaria at 12:30 p.m., and then the Eve Arden comedy Our Miss Brooks at 1 p.m. There will also be free refreshments, goodie bags and a raffle prize. Last year’s event sold out so be sure to reserve your seat: Call Maura at the Joyce Funeral Home at 781-894-2895 (8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday).

We also still have discount tickets available for “Taste of the Towns” on Thursday, April 25. The Watertown-Belmont Chamber of Commerce event, 5:30-8:30 p.m. at the Hellenic Cultural Center, 25 Bigelow Avenue, Watertown, costs $20, but if you buy your ticket through Club 50 the price is only $15!

Upper Deck Trolley Lower Level Lunch

(From left to right: Rita Scudder, Ulrich & Eileen Petersen, and Ellen Dupuis.)

We kicked off our 2013 day trips with a delightful day in Boston – and since we had so many signups for our Upper Deck Trolley Tour, we did it twice! First we boarded our brightly-colored, high-riding trolley into the city and enjoyed a lively narrated tour around town, learning new sides to legends like Paul Revere and Samuel Adams. Then we descended into the wine cellar of Massimino’s in the North End for a multi-course, family-style luncheon that was so plentiful and delicious that most of us left with a still-hearty sized entrée for later!

Tell us what you think -- and have a chance to win!

Thank you to all of the Club 50 members who responded to our question from the March newsletter: What's the most you have ever "bragged" about going on a big trip?

The choices and responses were:
1st choice – Sending just a postcard or two (57%)
2nd: Sharing a Flickr or Shutterfly album (29%)
3rd: Inviting family & friends over for a slide show (14%)
(No votes: Posting Facebook photos, Presenting your journey for your local library)

And congratulations to Julia M. of Waltham, the winner of a $25 gift certificate towards a Club 50 trip!
For this newsletter’s question – and your chance at that gift certificate – please respond to the “A Secret Desire …?” survey on the left by May 2.
